After a pretty lazy day yesterday...we just did a short 4 mile walk up from Aira Force waterfalls, up over the fells...the sun finally came out and I decided to do a circular walk up over Place Fell and back down to walk back along Ullswater lake.
A few views looking down at Patterdale from the bridle path.
Gilbert out in front leading the way
When we reached the top of this path the views were wonderful and even more so from the summit of Place Fell. It was so quiet, hardly any wind in places and the skylarks were making the only noise. At one point I came across 4 or 5 flitting about on the ground, I think they were juveniles and hope I have I.D'd it correctly.
The Kirkstone Pass
Ullswater just visible through the gap.
Gabe and Gily having fun scrambling up to the summit of Place Fell
I didn't think we would be lucky enough with the weather to have these sort of views.
Looking back towards the summit
Helvellyn in all it's glory, I bet there was a queue today to get to the top. I don't think I'll be taking the dogs up that way as I've been hearing scare stories about it. We'll go up a safer way avoiding the 'edges'
The Pooley Bridge end of Ullswater
Not a bad place to have lunch, the view is ok I suppose! :o)
Finally, I get to see a bird I haven't seen before, a male Redstart. Very striking in the undergrowth.
Even warm enough for shorts!
Then it's back to lake level looking across to Glenridding.
As it was such a beautiful evening we decided to check out the delights of Windermere. We were certainly not expecting to feel like we had just landed in the South of France but that's what it felt like down by the lake side. Not a breath of wind, everyone had gone home. It was so peaceful and quiet and WARM. The dogs were delighted to be able to chase sticks in the water, don't think they were expecting that either.
Off to Haweswater tomorrow in the hope of seeing some more wildlife.
Lovely photos Sarah, all very interesting, xxx
